As a painter with a teaching background in Drawing and Art History, Roberta Thole developed an interest in classical symbolism. The image of the column, arch, and vase recall antiquity and the echoes of art history. These classical symbols, painted on canvas, copper, or board, are balanced against passages that are abstract and painted with a contemporary eye. The work is layered and complex. Beyond the classical paintings, Thole also embraces portraiture, landscape, collage, and abstraction. These works often allude to a state of mind or a piece of music. All of her works express her deep interest in the process of making art.
In more than 50 years of painting, Roberta has moved cross country several times maintaining studios and galleries in Washington DC, Richmond VA., Reston, VA. and Redlands, CA. Roberta now maintains a studio at 263 Carver Circle, Redlands, CA. on the campus of Plymouth Village. She may be reached through RAA at 909 792 8435.
