14 Jun Mary Grinyer, 7/11 – 8/1
This show will include works from featured artist, Mary Grinyer’s past and current works. Grinyer began creating watercolors at Ramona High School in Riverside, CA and has continued to create and study art. Watercolors, photography, printmaking, ceramics, assemblage, jewelry, and now lapidary arts and sculpture are among the media she has worked in. Ceramics has overlapped with printmaking with her prints on clay and lapidary arts with sculpture and jewelry. Grinyer loves to experiment in all medias.
Current works include functional pottery, sculptural clay works, jewelry and lapidary work. Grinyer started ceramics at Goeske Senior Center under Lee Johnson and continued her studies with John Hopkins and Stephen Horn at Riverside Community College. Grinyer has studio space at Ceramic Services in Ontario, CA. She studies jewelry making with the jewelry group at Goeske Senior Center. We learn from books, magazines, workshops and classes and then teach each other new methods. A trip to Quartzite for beads led to doing lapidary work with the Orange Belt Mineralogical Society in San Bernardino. Everyone there generously shares their knowledge of rocks and jewelry making with new members.
The clay, the inks, the rocks all speak to Grinyer as she works. Often, especially in clay, she starts with no idea of the finished project. The clay speaks to me as I work. Something happens and I go with it. I join textured scraps of clay to help me be more creative. In sculpture, she does some drawings and models. The heart is a recurring theme after her Father had heart bypass surgery. Nature also inspires me.
Grinyer was raised in a military family and lived in Colorado, Alaska, Virginia, Texas, Tripoli, Libya, Maryland and California as a child. She spent 20 years in Northern California before moving back to Southern California. Seeing the beauty of this country and living in Lake Tahoe, Big Bear and Forest Falls inspired much of her early art and a love of gardening. She has an Associate Degree in Art from Lake Tahoe Community College.
