Darlene Douthit loved cartooning and portraits from day one. She enjoyed drawing animals on the dairy farm as a child. She meet her first professional cartoonist in the early
sixties when she was in her teens. Mr. Charles Schulz, creator of the Peanuts characters, was a very gracious mentor when she visited him at his home in Sebastepool California. Mr.Schulz looked over her art portfolio and offered encouragement and suggestions. He recommended that she enroll in the mail-order Art Instruction, Inc. School. He had gone to the school himself and now was one of their teachers. Darlene enrolled several years later and found the course very helpful. She also went to San Bernardino Valley College to study fine art and commercial art and Scottsdale Art School for illustration. Now Darlene enjoys teaching classes and workshops, being a mentor to her students.

Darlene does cartoon workshop throughout the Inland Empire at Libraries and Museums. She worked as the science column cartoon illustrator for award winning Children’s magazines: Hopscotch, Fun for Kids and Boy’s Quest for four years. Darlene has taught Children’s Book Illustration and Japanese Style Cartoon Workshops for adults and teens, at the California State University of San Bernardino and Riverside Art Museum.
