Janet Edwards Book Signing and RAA Bookfair to Benefit Art Education

Redlands’ renowned artist Janet Edwards will be signing her book, “Palms to Peaks, the Art of Janet Edwards” on Saturday, November 12, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Barnes and Noble Booksellers in Redlands. The book, published by ESRI, comprises more than 60 full-color pictures of her work, quotes by Janet, and written text by her husband, Fred Edwards, all in a beautiful cloth-bound book, with attractive dust jacket, and quote on her work by James Fallows, Atlantic correspondent, well known to many locally.

A BOOKFAIR at Redlands’ BARNES AND NOBLE BOOKSELLERS will be held in conjunction with the book signing, which will include art activities for kids, story time with RAA teachers, and student art exhibits from RAA and Redlands schools.

A percentage of all purchases including food in the B&N store that day until 11/17, when presenting ID# 10469088 at check out, will benefit art education at local schools and the gallery through the RAA’s Margaret Clark Art Education Endowment Fund. September 2011 Report from the Remodeling Task Force

Over a year ago the decision was made to pursue the possibility of remodeling and adding to our present facility. A Remodeling Task Force was formed to work with the architect: John Fisher, Patty Hayden, Evelyn Ifft (chair), Jerry Meeker and Annette Weis. Armantrout Architects were retained for the preliminary and feasibility plans only. The architect’s cost of $3500 was donated by Larry Harvill and Evelyn Ifft.

The task force met many times with Leon Armantrout and his assistant, Avani Pavasia, from Janurary to May 2011. We informed them of our needs, hopes and restrictions as pertained to the project. Avani spent much time researching ideas, materials, furniture, etc. and then planning the space.

Philosophy and Approach to the RAA Design

The inspiration and motivation to update and expand the present gallery space came from the collective enthusiasm of numerous hearts and souls directly and indirectly involved in the project.

The existing RAA State Street Gallery is the result of the history of a place originally built by the Gas Company in the mid-sixties and subsequently purchased in 1973 by Carl Doss for one of the first Century 21 Real Estate offices. Today its’ location at 215 East State Street in Redlands is enhanced by one of the Indian Laurel trees lining the street. These large trees define a beautiful setting in downtown Redlands for an art gallery/association.

There is also the remarkable motivation and inspiration among the members involved in this design project. The goals and visions of these folk are all based on various degrees of involvement. Together, all of us believe in creating a gallery design which can support our environment and health. A well-organized collection of design elements, both interior and exterior, can lead to higher productivity, happiness, and prosperity. The RAA Art Gallery is a perfect example of that happening in Redlands today.

Not so long ago I started working with Armantrout Architects who assigned me the task of creating a new and distinctive place for art education and exhibition purposes. RAA’s goal was to do a major renovation to gain space for their expanding classroom needs and a larger exhibit area. Thanks to Leon Armantrout and the RAA Remodeling Committee, my imagination took flight. Their strict guidelines and requirements became a challenge, but my mission was to translate their necessity into a creative preliminary design…and that is how it all began.

Due to the emerging green movement, artists have begun to incorporate nature into every field of art. My goal was to take advantage of that to create a gallery space that is unique, yet close to the roots of RAA and culture of Redlands. The idea of a floated organic shaped drywall ceiling with a partially exposed roof structure and a skylight will add high volume and light to the space. I have always enjoyed using a combination of different surface materials in interior space. The use of industrial materials, such as glass and bare metal, combined with sustainable materials like bamboo flooring and with natural organic shapes can create a very effective and inviting interior space. A freeform-shaped lacquer finished front desk, abstract metal tree branches for the jewelry display wall and exaggerated stacked metal strips behind the desk balance a perfect tranquility with sophistication. The green movement has already been effectively implemented by the solar panels above the north wall. We will retain and add to them with the new addition. Our goal is to make the building as green as possible in order to earn maximum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification so that Redlands will have another example of a high quality, sustainable building at RAA.

Each project has a story and inspiration. This project’s inspiration came from the Indian Laurel tree that stands just outside of the existing entrance. Time and trends are constantly altering that which shapes our society and living. As I always say, “Design makes a difference”. Materials gathered together harmoniously create a place for meetings and educational purposes, for exhibition of art as well as a contribution to the environment.

The interior design is edgy, yet it has a classic twist. When I envision the art gallery space, I think of simplicity, elegance, art, comfort and belongingness. With high regards for RAA’s specific guidelines and Leon Armantrout’s architectural expertise, this vision came alive. It can be seen when you look at the preliminary plans and sketches which are displayed in the gallery. The RAA art gallery should be a place where people can meet to appreciate, enjoy and create art.

Textile Artist Candy Glendening has a just had a DVD published by Interweave Press, entitled “Dyeing to Stitch: A Comprehensive Guide to Creating Colorful Fabric Art”. The information from the publisher reads:

Danielle Wallis 10/27 Program

From Studio Art to Social Art, by Danielle Giudici Wallis

The Tuesday Program is Free and open to the public.

Danielle Giudici Wallis will be presenting an overview of her work beginning with her early sculptural metalwork, and discussing the transition to more temporal materials and methods. She has moved from a solitary studio practice as an object maker, towards more of a social practice model which includes large and small collaborative projects.

Danielle is an artist, educator, and arts administrator. She received her BA from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio and her MFA from Stanford University, where she was the recipient of the Murphy Cadogan Grant, the James Borelli Fellowship in Art, the Anita Squires Memorial Fund in Photography and a fellowship from the Cantor Center for the Visual Arts.   Her   work has been exhibited widely in the Bay area and beyond, including shows at Catharine Clark Gallery, Mark Wolfe Contemporary Art, Raid Projects in Los Angeles, A.I.R. in New York, and The California Palace of the Legion of Honor which holds one of her artist’s books in their Achenbach collection. She was nominated twice for SFMOMA’s SECA Award and participated in the American debut of Takashi Murakami’s GEISAI Miami. Most recently, she has been exploring social and collaborative practices.

Examples of this include her “Beating Invasives” project, which was part of the Riverside Art Museum’s “Art Make,” and a series of collaborative artists’ books with letterpress printer, Marie Dern. Her administrative work has become a complementary medium as she explores larger collaborative projects, bringing organizations and communities together through the arts.  She currently serves as the Executive Director of Arts Connection, The Arts Council of San Bernardino County.

September Pastels Program

Exploring Pastels from Soup to Nuts! with Angela Koenig

Angela Koenig will talk about the Soft Pastel medium on Tuesday, September 26th at 7.00 pm. Programs are free and open to the public. She intends present an A-Z regarding soft pastels, types of paper and techniques. Here’s what Angela has to say about pastels:

Pastels are little gems of pure color! As a medium, they are fun to use and can be incorporated into your artistic works in a variety of ways! Their explosive and vibrant color make your paintings sing, however, many artists often under estimate the fantastic nature of this medium. Artist Angela Koenig will join us on September 26th at 7:00 pm to kick off our new season, and will answer your questions and help you to understand   what makes pastels such a great medium for artists!

Choosing the right pastel is critical and depends upon your use and technique. Angela will explain how to get started with your own collection of colors and most importantly how to keep the colors clean and glowing in your work! Additionally, the presentation will include several substrate options and painting techniques for use of this flexible medium with a number of different mixed media options. We will learn about pastels and their unique qualities; you will not want to miss this opportunity to explore the world of pastels, literally from soup to  nuts!

Over the years, Angela Koenig has developed her artistic skills using a variety of different media, including pastels, encaustics, printmaking, watercolor, acrylic and oil as well as Chinese brush and mixed media. Her spontaneous assembly of color and texture propels her distinctive style as she strives to capture the essential soul of her subjects which range from impressionistic and representational work to abstraction.  In her  mission statement Angela describes her personal artistic orientation - “Most artists concentrate on the visible. I strive to capture what is underneath the superficial layer to convey the very essence of my subjects. I’m not just putting a brush to canvas. Every stroke is an untold story: every painting reflects a vision of vitality and spirit.”  Her work is prismatically vibrant and aesthetically  complex.

As an award winning artist, Angela participates in a number of invitational shows, including the San Dimas Festival of Arts, and was one of only three American artists featured by the Escondido Museum of Art in a recent showing of international Encaustic works. She has been asked to give presentations on a variety of mediums as well as conduct workshops and demonstrations for various regional art groups.  Her work has been featured in several magazines, and she is currently a working member of the Critical Eye Studio, and well as the Palm Springs Art Museum Artist Council.

 

Program committee looking for members

The Program committee will be convening in July-August to develop the next Program series.

Committee members help select the artists - demonstrators - lecturers for the Programs. Each member choses or is assigned one of the program artists, handles the contact information for the artist and makes sure he/she has everything for their program.  Once the committee secures the program artists, they don't meet as a committee until the next summer.

McLaughlin & Rideout 10/28-11/18

Wine and cheese reception on Sunday, November 5th from 3 to 5 pm.

Diana McLaughlin and her son Casey Rideout are having a joint featured artist show because they have a shared interest in art; Diana’s medium is oils, Casey’s is photography.  They enjoy sharing ideas and talking about composition and color, thus thought it would be fun to do a joint show.  Our work will focus primarily on work from the California Central Coast where Casey lives and works and Diana lives part-time.

Diana H. McLaughlin Biography

I came to art late in life, after teaching elementary school, raising 3 children and working with community non-profits.  I enjoyed art classes while studying for a degree in Human Development from UC Davis and was always very aware of and creatively inspired by nature and my daily environment, but never actively participated in recreating it artistically.

I began taking oil painting and drawing instruction in earnest soon after my youngest child left for college. I’ve enjoyed classes at UC Riverside and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. I’ve also taken classes from skilled artists Lucille Van Wollfersdorf, Ken Auster, Peggi Kroll-Roberts, Debra Huse, Carol Marine, Dennis Hare and Martha Cowan.  I take weekly inspiration and advice from my artists’ group, Critical Eye Studio.

My inspiration comes from my travels as well as daily life. I paint landscapes, still life and animals.

Very early in my art career I started entering my paintings in local art shows and, to my great surprise, was awarded 1st place in the RAA Multimedia Mini Show.  My work has been juried into several local art competitions and is in private and public collections. Diana’s Artist Statement

To me, art represents more than an object, rather hundreds of hours of mistakes, experimentations and successes. You are looking at days of frustrations, then moments of pure joy when it all works. I love the process and, sometimes, the outcome.

Biography: Casey Rideout

I was born in Los Gatos, CA. After short stays in Manhattan and the Pacific Northwest my family moved to Redlands, CA, where I spent the remainder of my childhood. As a boy I would make forts in and among the orange groves and canyons that have all but disappeared from the area. The taste of stolen oranges and the smell of blossoms are fond memories of my childhood.

I first took notice of photography as an art during a summer stay with my grandparents. Their guest bedroom, where I was staying, doubled as a darkroom. Examples of their work hung on the walls along with certificates from photo competitions that they had earned. Looking back, I think I was just interested because the pictures were of people that weren’t a part of my family, they were different and interesting. In retrospect I realize that my grandparents were capturing singular moments in time. Fleeting experiences that were easy to miss but had been made eternal because my grandparents took notice and captured them on film. When I finally put my hands on a camera of my own I felt like I’d found the lens through which I could view life.

My camera is my license to wander, to walk slowly through the world, taking notice of the small moments of beauty that are so easily missed. I’ve found a wonderful subject in the Central Coast of California, where long, sandy beaches are interrupted by jagged, rocky coastlines and grassy hillsides are patched with green vineyards.

My recent work has focused on the stretch of coastline between Montaña de Oro State Park, just south of Los Osos, and Estero Bluffs State Park, just north of Cayucos. I lean toward using long exposures to smooth out the surging tides and isolate my subjects and the light that plays across them. I find myself shooting both B&W and color photos in equal numbers, choosing B&W to capture the contrast of light and shadow, and color when the vibrancy of the natural world cannot be denied.

I believe that everything is connected—the earth, the sea, all life forms and the universe. My way of showing this philosophy is in my technique of “see-through” arcs and lack of perspective.

Unlike usual perspective which places objects in the foreground as larger, in my paintings size does not matter. As in sumi scrolls, the higher in the painting, the farther is the object. In my paintings, an object can be the same size, whether in foreground or background.

My intention is for the viewer to be engrossed visually in the painting, with the eye continuing to follow new paths in lines, planes and values. The painting is successful if the viewer sees traditional objects which morph into semi-abstract design, then back into representation, a circular path.

Currently my paintings are vertical half sheets, with an underpainting of watercolor and vertical or horizontal dashes in gouache on top. The effect is one of a tapestry when viewed up close. When viewed farther away, the painting becomes one of a usual watercolor.”

As the days grow shorter I'm sure you are all grateful for the cooler temperatures and I imagine the plein air painters and photographers will be enjoying more opportunities for practicing their art.

As usual we have a packed calendar for the next month.  Our featured artists will be Bruce Herwig, photographer, followed by Diana McLaughlin.

Soon it will be time to be preparing your work for the next take-in for Autumn Gold on Oct. 20th. (If you have wall art please ensure that you have a wire for hanging.  This will ensure you do not get a phone call from the hard-working hanging committee asking you to pick up your work and adjust it.)

We are approaching that busy time of year that gives all of us an opportunity to display and sell.  Art For Heavens Sake on Oct. 13, 14, 15 will feature several of our artists along with other fine work.  This is followed closely by Art On State Street on October 29th.  There are still places left so if you have thought about it don't wait to sign up for a table.  Such a bargain at $25.

The night before will be our second annual Halloween party combined with the reception for Autumn Gold, that is October 28th. from 6-8.  Mark your calendars for a fun evening.  The suggested costume theme is "your favorite dead artist". There will be great snacks and movies again.

We are continuing with details of our refurbishing (see "Behind The Scenes" for more) and the compliments continue to roll in.  Thank you to everyone who has contributed to make the gallery sparkle.

So, even though events in the news can be depressing, we artists and our clients provide a balance by continuing to value and reflect the beauty of our world.

Thank you for doing that.  It is so important at this time.
