Candy Glendening has article published in Quilting Arts Gifts

Textile artist Candy Glendening has had an article published in Quilting Arts Gifts, an internationally distributed magazine devoted to Art Quilting. This particular article features a group of ornaments made from fabric and peltex (the stiffener found in baseball cap brims) inspired by the shapes of mid-century modern architecture.

These houses will feature prominently in her upcoming featured artist corner, (Dec. 5-26), so you’ll be able to see them in person.

Read more about them on her blog.

New Education Program Leadership

Greetings, RAA Membership; for those of you who don’t know, I’m now helping Sue Kovacevich with our Education Program. Patty Hayden has created a marvelous, remarkably successful program, bursting at the seams, and is now “turning over the keys” to me. I’m John Fisher and I’ve been a member of RAA for almost thirty years before I “retired” and took a break to do my own Art. I taught at Redlands High School with Pat Fullerton, Bernard Lowery, Bill Larsen and Jim Estrada. Together, along with current RUSD’s Art Dept staffs, I have participated in all aspects of RAA over the years. I worked with Margaret Clark as we began the Education Program for RAA in the ‘70’s; as well as had her as a teaching mentor and friend. I was on the MCAEEF Committee from the beginning until retirement. My school, RHS, created and has hosted the only official “Margaret Clark Gallery,” in Redlands, since 1999. So, I have lots of history and stories to swap with you. It’s good to be back and I’ll do what I can to contribute to our “Vision” for making Art Education available to all facets of our community. With your help and good wishes we can provide a program with equity, appropriateness, professionalism and intent, in honor of Margaret. Thanks for your support.

You may all choose to participate in our “Surveys” and “Art Teaching Strategies Presentations” as we narrow down and focus on our most immediate needs. Currently, I am collecting all the “Art Education” “formulas” that have been passed down through the year to “us” by Margaret Clark’s Legacy. I hope to have an “all RAA” collaboration on creating Margaret’s Teaching/Learning Policies. We’ve already started but will let you know of our meetings. I hope to include all your thoughts and concerns, as we transition.

“Art is Cool.” Young and old in our Community can benefit from both the gallery experience, and on-going learning opportunities. I plan to “bring us all together” for this cause. Email me at RAA Education, and if you’ll be at the “Art for Heaven’s Sake Show,” stop by and say “hi.”

Art on State Street

Sunday November 21, 9 am – 4 pm

The Redlands Art Association invites you to see their ART-ON-STATE STREET. RAA’s Semi-annual outdoor show will be happening on Sunday, November 21, downtown on State Street in front of the RAA Gallery and Art Center. The block of State Street between 6th and 7th will be closed to vehicular traffic and the artist’s wares will fill the street. ART-ON-STATE STREET is aptly named for this event. Like Market Night, the artists will have their canopies, tables, racks and standards lined up State Street with easy pedestrian walking down the middle of the street. Both fine arts and crafts will be offered out on the street and in the Gallery at 215 E. State Street. The event is one day only, Sunday November 21, between 9 am and 4 pm.

Participating artists are allowed to set their tables, chairs, etc. in front of the gallery AFTER 5PM on Saturday, Nov. 20. Overnight security will watch over them. City regulations prevent us from setting out our “stuff” on the sidewalk except for in front of the Gallery. Retrieve your stuff Sunday morning and set up your area. Artist sign-up sheet will be in the Gallery soon. Sign up for publicity. Entry fee: RAA member $10, non-member $28.

Artists for a Cause

clip_image002

Sunday, Nov. 15, 10 am-4 pm

“Artists for a Cause” is the inspiration of six local artists who joined their talents to create an annual fine art show and sale to benefit a chosen local charity. This year’s recipient charity is Children’s Fund of San Bernardino County. The Mission of Children’s Fund is to prevent child abuse in our community; to ensure that at-risk children who are abused, neglected, impoverished, or abandoned receive adequate food, shelter, clothing, medical care and education: and to provide equal opportunity for social development for these children. To date Children’s Fund has served over 1.2 million at-risk children in San Bernardino County. The 2010 show includes 20 local artists, including RAA members: Liz Coviello, Candy Glendening, Bruce Humpbert, Adele Johnson and Judith Sparhawk.  It will be held on Sunday, November 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the home of Adele Johnson, 560 Terracina, Redlands, CA. For more information, see their website: www.ArtistsforaCause.com

Beware of Emails asking for Money!

Just a friendly reminder. Beware of any email that asks for money – regardless of the reason e.g. for family, friends etc. who may be in trouble. If in doubt try to contact the person to validate the story. Western Union wont let you wire more than $600!

Hackers are out there, trying to get into our email accounts.

Make sure your passwords are a short phrase (two or three words). Substitute a number for a letter and a character for another letter. Don’t use family names or names of pets.

Recently, Liz Coviello’s email account was hacked into and a bogus email was sent to everyone on her contact list asking for money. Her contact list was then wiped. Fortunately she was able to reset her passwords and account settings.

RAA Tote Bags

There are still RAA bags for sale in the gallery, $6.95 each.

They are made from recycled cotton, leftovers from the cotton mills.

They are ideal for Take In – 19” wide & 14” tall, just right for medium sized wall art, jewelry etc. and shopping.

They will be for sale at Art on State Street. Bear them in mind for a little Christmas gift.
