Joe Oakes Acrylic Painting Workshop

Saturday March 10th  from 10 am – 4 pm

Fee: $100     RAA Member: $75

Join this award-winning artist for a fun, relaxed painting experience. He believes this kind of environment is more conducive to learning. There’s also a bit of structure so that he can present valuable art principals and demonstrate important painting techniques that can be applied to any subject matter. Put these skills to use in creating a finished acrylic painting.

Color in Painting: History, Classification Systems, Symolism, and Artists’ Thoughts

What is the most exciting, creative, and fun element of painting? Many artists would answer color, though others would reply line, subject matter, etc. Please join us Tuesday, Feb 22 at 7 pm at the Gallery 215 E. State St, downtown, Redlands to learn the answers to Zoeckler’s questions…

What are the definitions of terms used in discussing color? What is hue as opposed to value, intensity, tone, tint, and saturation? How is a color defined and just how many colors exist? What are colors made of, and are today’s colors different from earlier colors? When did synthetic pigments appear? What are fugitive colors? When were cakes of color devised? When were tubes of color devised? What is a binder and are there numerous types of binders? What is the difference between tempera and oil? When and where did oil painting arise and what were its new capabilities?

How old is the history of color? Why did the Greeks have no names for blue or green? Why do rainbows not look the same in paintings from different centuries? Why do earlier versions of the Bible mention or describe fewer colors and less often than later versions of the Bible? Why did some cultures forbid the use of certain colors? What have various colors symbolized throughout history? Culturally color has been defined differently and its symbols change from one culture to another. How does color relate to music, sound, or alchemy?

How does one study color? Scientists, painters, and poets, have all studied color and – using different methods -- arrived at different answers. What major color classification systems have been devised and when did they appear? When and why did the color wheel appear and what is it based upon? Just how many color wheels are there and are they the only way of representing color classification systems?

What pigments did certain artists use and how did they arrange them on their palettes? How did they carry them? What do artists paint boxes and portable easels look like? How do some artists select color combinations in a painting? What are the rules of using color and should there be any rules?

What do some well-known artists say about color? Eugene Delacroix famously asserted “Give me mud and I will make the skin of Venus out of it, if you allow me to surround it as I please.” Art is transformation – in the hands of talent it is mud to miracle.

Deborah L Bishop, Assemblage Artist

I began my journey as an artist when I was in high school art class for four years.  I began taking oil painting classes in my twenties when I was living in Riverside.  I enjoyed painting as a hobby until I started working full time for the County of Riverside. I took a hiatus on art for most of that time period. Then I accepted an early retirement offer from the County in 2010. Since then I have taken many art classes through Redlands Art Assoc. such as Oil Painting with Chick Curtis; Still Life Painting with Martha Cowan; Assemblage/Altered Art with Richard Freund; Copper Jewelry with Tia Shira; Pastels with Patricia Ford; Mosaics with Ada Jarvis, and probably a few others I’ve left out.

I’ve enjoyed all of the various classes I’ve participated in but the medium or type of artwork I am passionate about is Assemblage/Altered Art.  I can truly express my creativity through this art form.  The artwork I create is done in a three-part process: assembling the creation, prepping the piece for painting, and finally the painting process using fluid acrylic paints. One of my pieces, entitled “Lucky in Love” was submitted and accepted in the 45th Annual Multi Media Mini Show at the Redlands Art Assoc. Gallery.  I won a $50 Juror’s Choice Award for this piece.  I have entered my assemblage art in many Multi Media Mini Shows since then and a number of my pieces have been accepted. I have participated in Art on State Street & continue to sell my pieces through the Redlands Art Association. I hope to continue my journey through the world of art as long as I enjoy doing it and others enjoy seeing it.

Ada Domke Jarvis

Ada began formal instruction in painting and scientific illustration after high school. She paints with acrylics and oils. Her specialties are historic or personal buildings, scenes and Harleys painted on decorative glass balls and mini canvases which are sold in Redlands, Mission Inn and on commission. Her art has been shown and/or sold in Oregon, Ohio, B.C., Maryland, Tennessee and California. Her paintings have been accepted in several juried art shows in Oregon and California.

Sixteen years ago she taught herself the art of pique assiette (mosaics using beautiful broken china and other interesting objects). Her pieces include birdhouses, bird baths, furniture, mirrors, frames, garden stones, house numbers, tea sets, backsplashes, and wreaths.

Her teaching of pique assiette includes: private classes; workshop for over 40 artists at the 2008 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival; classes at Redlands Art Gallery. She is a volunteer judge for the National Veterans Arts Competition at the Loma Linda Veterans Administration Hospital. She helped judge Redlands Unified School District children’s art. For several years she volunteered on the Loma Linda Cultural Arts Association Board of Directors, and is currently a member of Redlands Art Association.

David Fairrington 1/20-2/16

David Fairrington will be a featured artist from January 20th to February 16. There will be a public reception on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm to see Fairrington’s exciting new work.

David’s show is called “Possibilities” with his new work exploring the possibilities of simplicity. “The possibilities are endless for all things you want to do. You just have to do them,” says Fairrington. “Don’t keep doing the same old stuff.”

Fairrington, a noted portrait painter, has painted Hollywood celebrities and elected officials as well as Vietnam combat scenes and soothing landscapes. His paintings are now in the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Washington D.C. His resume includes working with all the major film studios as a creator and designer. Fairrington’s clients have included athletes such as Arthur Ashe, former L.A. police chief William Bratton, and members of Congress. In the ballet world, David is known as the "Degas" of ballet painters. HIs clients continue to ask…”what goes on in your head that you can come up with this incredible work.”

Fairrington states, “I have experienced a lot in my life and it is wonderful to be able to paint some of the beauty and charm I have seen.

Ken Carmean 12/9-30

Redlands Art Association is honored to present Ken
Carmean, our featured artist, December 9–30.

Ken started making Pottery in his Senior year of High
School, from there he attended the local Junior College
in San Bernardino, Majoring in Art. He enrolled in Dick
Bossard’s class and It wasn’t long before he was an
emerging Studio Potter, making clay, glazes, loading
glaze kilns, firing Salt and Raku kilns. Then Proposition
13 hit and the college was shuttered for the summer.
After a season with a Hot Shot crew in the Forest
Service Ken went back to doing what he loved, working
full time as a Potter. He worked for this amazing potter
from Fontana who had a production studio. There he
learned how to throw a wide variety of forms quickly. He
also learned how to single-fire work to save on costs.
For 14 years he operated Arrowhead Stoneware. He
has sold his work all over the western United States to
many different retailers, art shows, and Galleries. After
a 7-year break from pottery Ken discovered Sonoma
Community’s Ceramics Program. Ken Carmean has
been teaching Ceramic’s classes for the past 5 years
at SCC.
“At SCC, we have two gas kilns that fire to cone 10, 3 Skutt
electric kilns that do a multi-range of firings, a Raku and
Soda kiln. There’s a fully equipped print shop, and a Fiber
Arts class room, and a lot more,” says Ken. For more

From Our Fearless Leaders

January 2018

Two days of rain and I find myself wanting to curl up and hibernate, but the work of RAA and the gallery continues!  I hope you all enjoyed the holidays, however you celebrated; mine were rather extended and actually are still incomplete.

I am pleased to say the gallery sales are continuing to climb with particularly successful seasonal sales with the tree ornaments being a star.

We have our next take in on Friday Jan. 12th. and I hope to see the walls and shelves as busy as ever because this show, Follow Your Heart, encompasses Valentines Day.

The reception, on Saturday January 20th at 4pm, will be combined with our featured artist David Farrington.  Please do come and join us to celebrate art and artists.

On January 23rd. we begin our monthly programs this year with a talk and demonstration of pastels by accomplished artist Patricia Rose Ford, followed closely by our major social event of the year, the annual Tea Party on Sat. Jan 28th. Please do join us for nothing but fun!

Sadly, December saw the passing of one of our long time members and born artist Joanna Mersereau.  Her memorial was held on January 6th. and I hear it befitted her status. You will read more about this further on in the newsletter.

Soon we will be presenting our spring film series to benefit the MCAEEF foundation. I'm sure the line up will be as diverse as ever.  I hope to see you at one of these events. YOUR participation is very important to the life of RAA.  We are the ones that make it happen and thrive.
