Japanese culture and cuisine at Redlands Art Association

The Redlands Sister City Association is proud to receive a delegation of 5 students and 7 adults from Hino, Japan, our Sister City since February 2004. The delegation will arrive on July 25 and stay with host families for two weeks to visit several locations in and around Redlands.  Hino, population around 182,000, is largely a regional commercial center and bedroom community for central Tokyo, much like Ontario is to Los Angeles.

On Sunday, July 29 from 1 to 3 pm, the Redlands Art Association’s Gallery and Art Center will host a Japanese doll display: dolls for the Girls Festival held in March and those for the Boys Festival in May. The Redlands Sister City Association will also provide additional artwork, tapestry, and traditional Japanese clothing for the display. Mrs. Edagawa, of the delegation, will conduct two demonstrations –   the traditional Origami technique of folding paper and how to cook Chirashi-zushi, Sohmen noodle, and Kashiwamochi dessert.

Mr. Edagawa, a professional photographer, will take photos of the delegation members during their homestay as well as Redlands landmarks, natural scenery and ordinary life. He plans to show them as art pieces for one week in Oct. 2013 during the 50th anniversary celebration of Hino’s city designation.

The public is invited to honor our Sister City at a reception on Sunday, July 29 from 1 to 3 pm, at the RAA Gallery and Art Center, 215 E. State Street, downtown, Redlands.
